The column, an essential architectural element, first emerged during the Greco-Roman era and has since become a symbol of ancient architecture. With its simplicity and distinctive aesthetics, the round column continues to serve as an enduring inspiration for architects.

Although columns once represented grandeur in temples and historical monuments, modern building materials and techniques have significantly expanded their visual and functional potential.

The Evolution of Round Columns in Modern Architecture

With the rise of contemporary design trends, minimalism has become a hallmark of modern architecture, emphasizing clean lines and subtle details. The round column, with its simplicity and elegance, seamlessly fits into this minimalist ethos.

A modern round column is defined by its smooth surface and absolute symmetry, reflecting balance and harmony in both exterior and interior spaces.

The aesthetics of columns embody timeless design principles—strength, beauty, and proportion.

A prime example of minimalist column design is found in Zaha Hadid’s Guangzhou Opera House. The bold aesthetics of this building feature a symmetrical arrangement of freestanding columns, enhancing its architectural expression.

How to Create a Perfectly Round Column

Achieving a perfectly round and smooth column presents a significant challenge. While construction equipment is widely available for rent, traditional iron formwork systems often fail to produce flawlessly round columns. Moreover, their installation and dismantling require additional time—typically two days—and considerable physical effort.

An innovative alternative was employed by developer NEXT for the DOWNTOWN project, utilizing disposable formworks from the Austrian brand Nevoga.

The single-piece monotube system ensures absolute precision and significantly simplifies the construction process:

  • A special liner inside the formwork guarantees perfect straightness along the entire vertical axis.
  • Fixing and leveling require minimal effort.
  • Once the concrete hardens, the formwork can be removed in seconds using the integrated ripcord system.
  • Construction of both horizontal and vertical elements can proceed simultaneously.
  • 100% waterproof—ensuring uninterrupted work despite environmental conditions.
  • Lightweight design allows for installation without the need for a crane.
  • Available in diameters ranging from 15 cm to 120 cm.

This innovative approach enables architects and builders to create perfectly round columns efficiently, maintaining both aesthetic and structural integrity.
